James Earl Jones, the legendary actor renowned for his iconic voice roles as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise and Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King, has passed away at the age of 93.
His representatives confirmed that he died peacefully at his home in upstate New York, surrounded by his family.
Jones’ deep, resonant voice made him one of Hollywood’s most recognizable talents. In addition to his legendary voice acting, he had a distinguished career spanning film, television, and theater.
He gained prominence with his role in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove in 1964 and went on to star in classics such as Field of Dreams, Conan the Barbarian, Coming to America, and The Hunt for Red October.
Jones was also one of the rare EGOT winners, having earned an Emmy, Grammy, Honorary Oscar, and three Tony Awards. His acclaimed Broadway performances in The Great White Hope and Fences further established him as one of the greatest actors of his generation.
Beyond his entertainment career, Jones served in the United States Army as part of the 75th Rangers Regiment. His voice was also famously associated with CNN, with his signature “This is CNN” becoming an iconic catchphrase.
