According to NigerianTribune, lawyer Ununu Sunday Uguru is alleged to have shot and killed a man named Nnamdi Nwite Ugo during the celebration of the Izi Unuphu Power of Attorney community election in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney oversees land management in the area and is engaged in efforts to reclaim lands it believes were unlawfully acquired or sold to non-indigenes.
The election for new leaders was held on August 22, 2024. Reports indicate that a supporter of Ununu secured a prominent position, which led to celebrations among the group.
During the festivities, Ununu, who serves as the group’s legal counsel, discharged his firearm. A bullet accidentally hit Ugo, entering through his mouth. Ugo was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, August 23.
A local source told the publication that money had allegedly been promised to the deceased’s distant relatives for his burial, as his parents are deceased.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that Ununu has been apprehended. “I am aware of the situation and he is currently in our custody. However, I am not familiar with all the details of the case,” the spokesperson said.
