The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has condemned a young woman for sharing a video of her mentally ill mother.

According to the minister, the video was shared for “personal gain and social media content.”

In the video, which the young woman did not identify herself in, she introduced the mentally unstable woman as her mother.

She explained that her mother’s mental health declined after her father’s death, leading to a deterioration in her ability to care for herself and her other children. The woman has since been living on the streets, and the young lady mentioned that she occasionally visits her with food and money.

The Minister reacted strongly, calling the video “unacceptable, potentially harmful, and troubling.”

She stated: “URGENT CONDEMNATION AND CALL TO ACTION.

“We condemn the disturbing video report that exploits a woman’s mental illness for personal gain and social media content. This behavior is unacceptable, potentially harmful, and deeply troubling. We denounce the exploitation of vulnerable individuals, especially those with mental health challenges. Mental illness requires compassion, understanding, and support, not ridicule or exploitation.

“The Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs urgently seeks information about the mother’s identity and condition to ensure she receives proper care and protection. A reward is offered for any assistance in locating her.

“Appropriate measures must be taken to address this issue. We urge everyone to respect the dignity and humanity of those struggling with mental health issues and to report similar instances immediately. Let us work together to prevent exploitation and provide support to those in need.”
