The games, created for wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women, have been a significant success for Prince Harry since he founded them in 2014.
But will this UK-based event offer a chance for reconciliation between King Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry?
HELLO!’s Royal Editor Emily commented on the decision: “Birmingham was competing with Washington DC to host the Games in 2027. Returning to the UK is fantastic for veterans and the country, but it raises questions about the royals’ involvement.
“The King, as head of the armed forces, would ideally support it, but the family’s current difficulties with Harry complicate matters. If the Games were held in DC under a Trump presidency, that would also pose challenges for Harry given their strained relationship.”
Emily added, “I’m excited it’s coming to Birmingham, but the big question is, will there be any royal involvement?”
Ailsa Anderson, the late Queen’s former communications and press secretary, shared her thoughts: “Should there be? This is Prince Harry’s initiative, and he’s done an extraordinary job. As the daughter of a naval officer, I know how much the military appreciates his efforts. Does anyone else need to be involved? If another royal attends, the focus will shift to their interaction with Harry, not the Games.”
She continued, “We’ve seen how quickly things can change. In the last six months, much has happened. With three years to go, there could be opportunities to rebuild relationships. Any unresolved family issues are tragic, whether you’re a monarch or a market stallholder. It might make the situation more relatable, but it’s challenging with the world’s eyes on you.”
