Scotland: King Charles Expected To Take Extended Summer Break This Year

The Mail on Sunday reveals that the 75-year-old monarch plans to revive a royal tradition once observed by the late Queen Elizabeth II, who typically stayed at her Scottish retreat, Balmoral, until late September or early October.

Sources have indicated that King Charles intends to enjoy a longer stay in Scotland, potentially at the Castle of Mey, Birkhall, or Balmoral.

In 2023, Charles chose to return to London earlier than usual and, in late September, he and Queen Camilla embarked on their postponed state visit to France. During their three-day trip, they visited Paris and Bordeaux, with ceremonial events at the Arc de Triomphe and a state banquet at the Palace of Versailles.

Balmoral, situated on over 50,000 remote acres in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has long been a private retreat for the royal family, offering them privacy and opportunities for walks, picnics, fishing, and barbecues.

The Duke of Edinburgh left a legacy at the property with a large kitchen garden, harvested between August and October during the royal family’s summer break. Balmoral was also a favorite residence of the late Queen, as noted by Princess Eugenie in the ITV documentary Our Queen at Ninety.

“It’s the most beautiful place on earth,” she said, before adding: “I think Granny is the happiest there, I think she really, really loves the Highlands… Walks, picnics, dogs – a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs! And people coming in and out all the time.
