King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their teenage daughters hosted Spain’s national football team at La Zarzuela Palace in Madrid on Monday, the day after the squad’s 2-1 victory against England in the final in Germany.
The players brought the Henri Delaunay Trophy, and the royals posed with the iconic silverware. Future queen Leonor, 18, and Sofia, 17, recreated a pose they had taken with the trophy 12 years earlier when they were six and five. The young royals again wore Spain’s football kit for the occasion.
King Felipe, 56, wore a grey suit with a red tie, while Queen Letizia, 51, donned a scarlet Carolina Herrera dress. The squad sported special shirts with the number four, representing their four European Championship titles. Besides 2024 and 2012, Spain also won as hosts in 1964 and in 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.
King Felipe and Infanta Sofia flew to Berlin to watch the final in person, while the Prince of Wales and Prince George, seated alongside the Spanish royals, experienced heartache as England lost. Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute goal secured the win for Spain, and cameras captured William and George’s reactions to England’s last attempts to equalize.
Before the match, the British and Spanish royals posed for a photograph, with the Prince and Princess of Wales’s X account reposting the snap with the caption: “May the best team win.”
Prince William and Kate expressed their support for the Three Lions in a personal message on Monday: “@england, your teamwork, grit and determination were an inspiration to all of us, young and old. Congratulations to Spain. W & C.”
The message included a candid photo of Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, wearing personalized England shirts as they watched the match at home in Windsor.
