Mass shooting in Minneapolis neighborhood leaves TWO dead and four people injured

A police officer was was killed by a gunman who ambushed the officer as he responded to the scene of another shooting.

Four other people were also injured in the mass shooting in a Minneapolis neighborhood on Thursday evening, May 30.

Police confirmed that six people were shot near 22nd and Blaisdell in the city’s trendy Whittier neighborhood around 6 p.m. 

A 36-year-old officer, Jamal Mitchell, was killed and the gunman was also killed.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

Police initially responded to a call about two people shot at an apartment building in Minneapolis’ Whittier neighborhood around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived, someone shot at them immediately, and the officers returned fire, Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell said.

Mitchell and the suspect were killed and another officer was injured, Blackwell said. She said authorities later found three other civilians who had been shot, one of whom died at the scene.

AT THE SCENE

After the shooting, dozens of cops flocked to the Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis where several were seen sobbing and consoling each other.

STATEMENT FROM A NEIGHBOR

A resident in the neighborhood, Reuben Molina, said he was in his apartment when he heard several shots ring out from a floor below.

He said he heard a woman phone 911 and tell the dispatcher two people were shot in the head.

‘I could hear the bullets ricocheting and bouncing off stuff as I’m trying to get somebody to come inside to check on the people who were shot.’
