Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu's Bail Request And Refusal To Release Him From DSS Custody

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Biafra nation agitators, to reinstate his revoked bail and transfer him from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody to house arrest or prison custody.

Justice Nyako noted that Kanu had previously submitted the same request, which was dismissed for lack of merit.

In her ruling, Justice Nyako affirmed that Kanu had absconded after being granted bail and fled the country. She also highlighted that the sureties who had initially guaranteed his bail had been released from their obligations because they could not locate him.

Justice Nyako advised Kanu to appeal to the Court of Appeal, as it was his only recourse. She disagreed with Kanu’s lead counsel’s assertion that the Supreme Court had ruled against the revocation of his bail, clarifying that she found no such ruling upon reviewing the Supreme Court’s judgment.

Kanu adamantly refused to stand trial in any Nigerian court, arguing that doing so would violate the Nigerian Constitution and international law.

He accused the Federal Government’s counsel, Asiwaju Solomon Awomolo SAN, of committing illegal acts in prosecuting him and labeled Awomolo a terrorist and dishonest for allegedly conducting a trial in breach of an international treaty to which Nigeria is a party.

Kanu maintained that any actions contrary to the Supreme Court’s pronouncements on his rendition from Kenya would be acts of terrorism.
