Once again, the Met Gala showcased a stunning array of bold fashion statements, featuring artistic gowns, shimmering suits, and a few eccentric showpieces.
Amidst this extravagant display, a trend quietly made its return to the red carpet – black tights.
Leading the style charge, Sienna Miller, aged 42, graced the New York pre-party in a green minidress adorned with a large flower appliqué, accompanied by her partner Oli Green, aged 27.
While she opted for white stiletto pumps to complement her party attire, she intriguingly incorporated a pair of £30 black Luxe 9 stockings from Wolford into her ensemble, evoking a nostalgic nod to red carpet looks from the noughties.
Sienna is not alone in resurrecting the trend of black tights in recent months. Celebrities such as Lily Collins, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Lawrence have all been spotted donning the accessory at various events since 2023.
However, by choosing to wear them at the Met Gala, Sienna has firmly established their resurgence in vogue.
Although black tights were synonymous with red carpet looks over a decade ago in the 2000s, their contemporary rendition presents a subtle evolution. Gone are the days of thick, opaque tights paired with vibrant floral gowns, juxtaposing light and dark shades.
Today’s iteration sees lower denier, sheer stockings delicately veiling the legs with a whisper-light layer, often paired with textured black dresses (although not in Sienna’s case).
The resurgence of this trend can be traced back to Chanel’s 2020 collection, where Gigi Hadid graced the Paris catwalk adorned in lightweight stockings intricately embroidered with the iconic French Fashion House’s logo.
