The United Arab Emirates was thrown into apocalyptic scenes when more than 4.7ins of rain fell before 4pm yesterday – making up the typical yearly average. 

Why is Dubai Airport Flooded?

The heavy thunderstorms on Tuesday, dumped.the heaviest rain ever recorded in the country in the span of hours as it flooded out portions of major highways and Dubai’s international airport.

Desperate families rushed to flee Dubai last night as widespread flooding continued to overwhelm the city.

And roads leading to airport were seen submerged in water, with some wealthy drivers in luxury cars bragging of ‘floating’ their way through the carnage.

Footage from inside the airport showed passengers sleeping on the floor as they waited for flights out of the country, after dozens were grounded following torrential rain in images that resemble an apocalyptic world.  

Overcrowding in Airport

Some reports suggested people were being turned away from the terminal, such was the level of overcrowding inside as hundreds of travellers looked to escape the chaos.

A total of 17 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled during the morning and three were diverted, Dubai Airports said in a statement.

What is the Situation a Dubai International Airport?

Operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB) were later suspended for 25 minutes on Tuesday due to an intense storm, the airport said in a statement.

Shocking video showed several jets cutting through murky water at Dubai International Airport, as the huge aircrafts appeared to be floating through the water in footage that went viral on social media.

Abandoned cars have been left to gather and pile up as they remain submerged in heavily flooded roads.

A handful of brave drivers battling the elements have been spotted sitting atop their roofs and waiting for rescue under the black sky.

It was a long night in Dubai and it will be a long day today too as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue in the region through, per UAE’s National Center of Meteorology.
