Man charged with murder AFTER grandfather was killed trying to stop thieves stealing his car

Marvin Sutton, 25, was charged with the murder of grandfather Christopher Hanley, who was found dead on Olympic Street, in Beswick, Manchester, on Saturday, March 16. 

How it Happened?

The 57-year-old died after reportedly ‘holding on’ to the bonnet of his Land Rover car in a desperate attempt to prevent it from being snatched before he was run over. 

Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services at the scene, Mr Hanley ‘unresponsive’ and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tribute

The victim’s heartbroken family described him as a ‘loved and devoted family man’ who was ‘tragically and unfairly’ taken from them.

Sutton, of no fixed abode, appeared today via videolink at Manchester Crown Court and spoke only to confirm his name during the brief hearing. No plea was entered. 

Police Investigation

Police launched a murder investigation following Mr Hanley’s death and arrested two people.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder while another 43-year-old man arrested remains on bail on suspicion of assisting an offender.
