A woman has been rushed to hospital after being mauled by a dog in a cemetery, as witnesses report a heavy armed police presence at the scene.
Police were called to Hurst Cross Cemetery in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester after the dog was believed to have bitten the woman on the leg.
Witnesses reported seeing several firearms officers at the cemetery in Tameside earlier this afternoon.
The Attack
The woman was attacked by the dog at about 1.25pm today.
The dog was then secured and armed officers stood down, without firing their weapons.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: ‘At around 1.25pm today, officers responded to reports of a dog attacking a female in Hurst Cemetery, Prospect Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.
‘Officers attended and the dog was subsequently secured.
‘The female was taken to hospital with non life-threatening or changing injuries.’
Images from the scene of the mauling show a ‘no dogs allowed’ sign while another notice reads that there is a ‘dog exclusion order’ across the cemetery.
The notices, which feature the Tameside Council logo, say ‘no dogs allowed in the cemetery grounds’, apart from guide dogs.
The notices add that there is a maximum penalty of £1,000.
