1 killed, 22 WOUNDED in shooting near Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade

One person has been killed and 22 were injured after gunshots rang out toward the end of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Wednesday afternoon, Stacey Graves, the city’s police chief, said at press conferences on Wednesday.

Some Arrests Happened

According to Graves, three persons have been detained and under investigation for the incident.

How The Shooting Began

Graves said the shooting began on the west side of the city’s Union Station immediately after a rally honoring the Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Police don’t know a motive or what led up to the shooting, said Graves. She said she heard that fans may have helped subdue a shooter.

‘I’m angry at what happened today,’ Graves said. ‘The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment.’

Video on social media showed dozens and dozens of officers converging to the right side of the stage and running inside Union Station with their weapons drawn.

Loud pops rang out as soon as the confetti began falling as the players left the stage, according to a reporter on the ground at the parade. Witnesses at the scene said they saw multiple people bleeding, although it was not clear what the source of their injuries was.

Statement From Witnesses

A woman who attended the parade with a group of friends said, ‘I saw two people bleeding on the ground and we got out of there as fast as we could run.’

Another woman, who attended the parade with her husband and daughter, said, ‘We heard the shots and I grabbed my daughter’s hand and ran with the group. When people start running like that, I knew it was something.’

Two Girls in Solidarity

Two girls who attended the parade were seen crying and comforting each other while they tried to reach their mothers.

Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes tweeted, ‘Praying for Kansas City.’

The Kansas City Police Department said beforehand that 34 ‘local, state and federal law enforcement agencies will be assisting KCPD for the celebration.’

‘It’s very disheartening,’ U.S. Rep. Mark Alford said on CNN. ‘We should be able to come together in situations like this and celebrate victories, not have to deal with a shooting.’
