Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Holmgren’s basketball prowess was evident from an early age. He quickly established himself as a dominant force on the court, showcasing his impressive height, athleticism, and skill set. Holmgren’s high school career was nothing short of spectacular. He led his team to two consecutive state championships, averaging 18.6 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game in his senior season. Holmgren’s basketball journey continued at the collegiate level, where he enrolled at Gonzaga University. In his freshman season, Holmgren averaged 14.0 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game, earning him consensus second-team All-American honors and the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

Holmgren’s impressive performances at Gonzaga caught the attention of NBA scouts, and he entered the 2022 NBA Draft as one of the most highly sought-after prospects. He was selected with the second overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder, marking the beginning of his professional basketball career. The scintillating play of the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft has energized Thunder fans and given them hope for a bright future. His ability to score, pass, rebound and protect the rim at his size is extremely rare and has evoked comparisons to all-time greats like Kevin Garnett and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Despite entering the NBA with high expectations, Holmgren faced a setback early in his rookie season, suffering a Lisfranc injury that sidelined him for the entire year. The injury was a major disappointment, but Holmgren remained focused on his recovery and rehabilitation, determined to return to the court stronger than ever.

His determination paid off, as Holmgren made a triumphant return to the NBA in the 2023-24 season. He has shown flashes of his brilliance, showcasing his versatility and ability to impact the game on both ends of the court. His performances have been encouraging, and he has the potential to develop into a star player in the NBA. In 14 games played in November, Holmgren averaged 14.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting over 50% from the field. He recorded his first career double-double on November 9th when he scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against the Toronto Raptors. Just two days later against the New Orleans Pelicans, Holmgren scored 23 points which included 7 three-pointers made from 9 attempts.  

Chet’s stellar month also included a 20-point, 15-rebound performance against the Memphis Grizzlies on November 18th. For the month, he led all rookies in blocks per game and three-point shooting percentage above 40%. By earning the first Rookie of the Month award of his career, Holmgren joins an elite Thunder trio: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and Kevin Durant as franchise players who have received the honor. The award highlights not just his on-court excellence, but Chet’s smooth transition and instant impact at the highest level of the sport.
