A caretaker discovered the body of a woman in a bin in North London, according to worried locals.

Police were called to the area – inundated by building works – just before 9am on Thursday following reports of a female body found on Granville Road, in Golders Green.

The death is being treated as ‘unexpected and unexplained’.

The discovery of the dead body

One man said he saw her body from his ninth floor flat and claimed she lay beside a tipped over bin for hours while police investigated.

Dad of three Azmat Khan said the woman had brown hair and was not black, but could have been ‘Asian’ or ‘European’.

Several residents said that the caretaker had made the discovery.

Mr Khan, 44, said he returned from dropping his kids at school at 8.45am, around 15 minutes before the alarm was raised, and saw nothing unusual.

He said: ‘She had long, dark black hair. I could only see it from the top.

‘Definitely, according to me, I could see she was not African. She could have been Asian or European.

‘I came around 10pm or 11.30ish, and I didn’t see any abnormality in that.

‘In the morning when I went to drop my kids to school, I didn’t see any abnormality.

‘When I came back around 8.45am, I came along with a lady, we both went upstairs to our flats and we didn’t notice anything.

‘It was not outside. I think it was the lady who unfortunately had it happen yesterday. We didn’t notice anything at all.

Was the dead body stabbed?

‘I thought if she had been stabbed there would be some blood spots or something, but there was no abnormality.

‘I was very concerned yesterday because I have a very small child, so you know, and quite often I need to go and pick up the kids.

‘Officers Friday told me that the deceased person was not a child. We were thinking that it was a child.

‘There was a pink rucksack, they put that outside the bin and it was there three or four hours, like the whole day.

‘Even the body [was out there] like two, three, four hours.

‘Outside my flat I could see it [the body] until 2pm. I could see from my flat where the body was.

‘They covered [it] later. Last time I saw it was around 2pm. Then I went out and I came back around 5pm.

‘I was very stressed. I could only see the hair. They should tell us that if they are from our building, so at least we could know, we are deeply concerned.

‘The caretaker, he called the police.’
