Morrissey has savagely slammed several celebrities and music industry figures who continue to pay tribute to Irish music legend Sinead O’Connor after her family announced her sad death at the age of 56.
On July 26, Sinead’s family said they were ‘devastated’ over the singing icon’s passing, writing in a heartbreaking statement: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.’
Since the news of the Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s untimely death – which came just 18 months after her 17-year-old son Shane took his own life – tributes have been pouring in from far and wide for the unmatched talent and brave soul that Sinead was.
Stars including Piers Morgan, Conor McGregor, Russell Crowe, Sharon Horgan, and Niall Horan have all flocked to social media to pay tribute to the woman who helped put Ireland on the map during one of it’s grimmest times.
As celebrities continue to share loving words about Sinead, Morrissey, 64, has released a scathing statement on his website criticising the response to the singer’s death, asking ‘where was the support for her while she was still alive’.
Sharing a post called ‘You Know I Couldn’t Last’, the musician wrote: ‘She was dropped by her label after selling 7 million albums for them. She became crazed, yes, but uninteresting, never. She had done nothing wrong.
‘She had proud vulnerability and there is a certain music industry hatred for singers who don’t ”fit in” (this I know only too well), and they are never praised until death – when, finally, they can’t answer back.
‘You praise her now ONLY because it is too late. You hadn’t the guts to support her when she was alive and she was looking for you.
‘The furious music star continued on as he compared Sinead’s death to those of other tragic female stars including Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and Judy Garland.
‘Why is ANYBODY surprised that Sinead O’Connor is dead? Who cared enough to save Judy Garland, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Marilyn Monroe, Billie Holiday? Where do you go when death can be the best outcome? Was this music madness worth Sinead’s life?
‘No, it wasn’t. She was a challenge, and she couldn’t be boxed-up, and she had the courage to speak when everyone else stayed safely silent. She was harassed simply for being herself.
‘Her eyes finally closed in search of a soul she could call her own.’
Sinead had struggled with mental health issues since her son Shane, 17, took his own life in January 2022.
Shane escaped a hospital while on suicide watch and was later found dead some hours later, with Sinead being left utterly heartbroken and cursing the Irish mental health services for failing her son.In her last social media post before her death.
Sinead paid tribute to her beautiful son Shane, confessing that it was difficult to live without him by her side.
‘He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally,’ she wrote alongside a picture of the two.
