Titanic director James Cameron has been approached to help make a drama series about the Titan submersible disaster which left five people dead, industry insiders have claimed.
A streaming network is said to have contacted the acclaimed filmmaker, who is also a keen submariner and has himself dived to the wreck of the tragic cruise liner 30 times.
Hamish Harding, 58, Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son Sulaiman Dawood, 19, French Navy pilot Paul-Henry (PH) Nargeolet and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush all lost their lives in the tragedy last month.
The OceanGate sub lost communications with its support vessel on Sunday, June 18, and search and rescue teams scoured the ocean for days, before the crew was confirmed to have been lost.
Now the tragedy, which gripped the world, could be made into a series, with The Sun reporting that an insider has tipped Cameron as a major streaming giant’s ‘first choice director’.
A source told the paper: ‘The Titan disaster is already being looked at as a major series for one of the world’s biggest streamers — and James is first choice for director.
‘It is a subject close to his heart.’
He told the story of the Titanic so compassionately it feels like a natural step for him to take this on.
‘Retracing the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking but there would be a lot of time, money and resources dedicated to it.’
Cameron is well-placed to take on the series, as he won three Oscars for 1997 blockbuster Titanic, including Best Picture, and is also an expert on deep-sea exploration.
It has also been reported that Hollywood stars are being penned as potential leads in the project.
Matt Damon, who is set to star in highly-anticipated Christopher Nolan movie Oppenheimer, is said to be on the wish list of actors.
Kumail Nanjiani, star of the romcom The Big Sick, was also named by The Sun.
Cameron, 68, previously used the now-decommissioned Mir submersibles which were operated by the Russian Academy of Sciences to dive to the wreck.
He used the subs to film the Titanic’s wreck as he was putting together the Leonardo DiCaprio-fronted movie of the same name.
His underwater trips happened in the mid-1990s and early 2000s and went as deep as 3,821 metres.
