Republicans are unsatisfied with Hunter Biden‘s guilty plea in his tax fraud case – calling it a ‘sweetheart deal’ and a ‘distraction’ from the more scurrilous bribery allegations they are probing.
Hunter Biden’s lawyers have reached a deal with prosecutors that would see him plead guilty to two tax crimes and resolve his gun form violation but likely avoid jail time, according to new Justice Department filings.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy said the new plea deal would actually help the House GOP’s investigation because the Department of Justice could not use a pending investigation to withhold information.
‘Now this does nothing to our investigation,’ McCarthy told reporters Tuesday morning.
‘It actually should enhance our investigation because the DOJ should not be able to withhold any information now saying that there’s a pending investigation. They should be able to provide Chairman Comer with any information that he requires.’
‘It continues to show the two-tier system in America,’ the speaker added. ‘If you are the president’s leading political opponent, the DOJ tries to literally put you in jail and give you prison time.
‘But if you are the president’s son, you get a sweetheart deal.’
‘Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling and possibly bribery,’ Oversight Chair James Comer said in a statement.
‘These charges against Hunter Biden have no impact on the Oversight Committee’s investigation,’ the Kentucky Republican added.
The president’s son has been under investigation for five years for tax and financial allegations, as well as for paperwork for purchasing a handgun where he attested that he did not abuse drugs.
