Netflix has given the ax to its original drama series Sex/Life, Deadline reported on Friday.
A spokesperson with the streamer told the publication that the second season, which had a reduced six episodes compared to the first season’s eight episodes, had brought the show to a natural ending.
They added that the streamer was ‘proud’ of the show and all the word put into it by its cast and crew.
The cancellation was oddly timed, as Sex/Life lead Sarah Shahi recently criticized Netflix and the series for what she saw as a ‘gimmicky’ approach to the second season. DailyMail reported.
Last month, it was announced that she would be starring in a pilot for the potential ABC series Judgement [sic], which raised questions about how she would juggle both shows if the new one got a series order.
According to Deadline, Judgement was able to secure a primary position for Shahi, meaning that Sex/Life would have to negotiate a schedule for her to film a third season if it was.
She played the role of a married woman who was seemly happy with her partner, until an old fling reentered her life and ignited her passion.
The actress who spoke in February about falling in love with costar and boyfriend Adam Demos opened up about the season on an episode of Amanda Hirsch’s Not Skinny Not Fat podcast on Tuesday.
While Shahi seemed quite pleased with the first season of the show, she clearly wasn’t happy with the direction it took in Season 2.
‘I’m not going to put it down, but I definitely did not have the support that I did the first season from the people involved in the show. It became a much different thing for me, and I’m not afraid to say that,’ Shahi admitted.
It’s unclear if she knew that that season would be canceled when she made her criticisms.
‘I struggled with the material. I just felt the thing that it had the first season — I mean, I’m never gonna work for Netflix again now after saying all this, but I can’t lie. And it was definitely a challenge,’ she added.
Sex/Life debuted the six-episode second season on March 2, though the streaming service has yet to announce either a renewal or a cancellation at this time.
