LAPO: Woman commits suicide by setting herself ablaze over inability to repay N70,000 loan

Mama Dada who is a middle-aged woman committed suicide in Ogun State by setting herself over her inability to offset a loan of N70,000 she took from a microfinance bank, LAPO.

It was gathered that the woman set herself ablaze in her rented apartment located at the Oke-Keesi, Itoko area of Abeokuta on Saturday afternoon, February 18, 2023.

Witnesses said the deceased was burnt beyond recognition as the entire building was also razed down.

An eyewitness and a resident of the area, Bolanle Ajayi, who spoke to PUNCH said that the woman killed herself after she was unable to pay back a loan she took from LAPO.

‘I was told that she obtained the loan running into N70,000.’ she said.

The secretary of the Community Development Association in the area, Ade Babawale, confirmed that the deceased was owing the bank.

On the fateful, the woman reportedly sent one of her children to buy her some petrol, l and also use style to discharge the small boy then she locks herself up inside the room, poured petrol everywhere including herself and set the whole place on fire.

It was said that the woman had taken the petrol, excused the little boy, locked herself up, wet the room including herself and set the house ablaze.

A neighbour, Rasheed Aina, said that the woman killed herself after she was unable to pay back a loan she took from one of the microfinance banks popularly known as ‘LAPO’.

‘Her neighbour told me that the loan was to the tune of N70,000,’ Aina said.

Her corpse has been deposited at the state General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.
