John Krasinski refused to record the betrayal scene in The
Office!
Executive producer Greg Daniels’ original
plan for The Office was for Jim (John Krasinski) to cheat on Pam (Jenna Fischer)
with the character Cathy Simms, who is hired as a season 8 temp to make up for
Pam’s absence, out of work because of her license maternity.
However, the idea ended up not going forward
because Krasinski refused to record, fearing public reaction, which was
explained in an excerpt from the book Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate
Oral History of The Office.
It’s said: “That was the only time I
remember putting my foot down… I remember saying things I never thought I
would say, like ‘I’ll record this.’ I feel there is a limit to where the
audience can be taken. They are very dedicated; we need to show them a lot of
respect. But there comes a time when if you go too far, they won’t come back. And
I believe if you showed Jim cheating, they’d never come back.”
