The shooter who was responsible for the shooting of 17 students and a staff member in Parkland School has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of a parole.
The Parkland school shooting occurred in the year 2018 by then 19 years old Nikolas Cruz at the South Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school.
Ever since the incident, the case has been in court undergoing trial as just last month, the prosecutor’s appeal for a death penalty was rejected by a Florida Jury.
As of Wednesday, Nikolas has been given a life sentence without parole, and this has caused an outrage among the families of the victims as the they believed sparing him the death penalty might send a bad message to future shooters.
The verdict was announced by Broward County Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who was confident that Cruz understood the proceedings of the court.
Cruz was sentenced to life on 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder, and he would be serving these sentences consecutively.
Furthermore, a motion was granted by Judge Scherer under Florida’s so called Son of Sam law, and this means that Cruz will not be benefiting from his crimes.
Finally, Judge Scherer commended the families of the victims of the shooting on their patience throughout the case as she stated she did not know how she would have reacted or behaved herself if she was in the same situation.
