Would the United States use tactical nuclear weapons “first” in defense of NATO if they were losing a conventional war against Russia

Wes Frank – “Both actions would carry risks of further Russian nuclear escalation.”

NATO conventional forces outnumber the Russian military by about four to one. If Russia uses a nuclear weapon as a “warning shot”, NATO might use its overwhelming air power to counterattack.

It is also possible that it might use an intermediate range nuclear weapon as a “warning shot” to show Russia what it is willing to do.

Both actions would carry risks of further Russian nuclear escalation, Wes Frank said.

Russia is not the Warsaw Pact or the Soviet Union. It does not have a tenth of the striking power of the old Red Army.

It can cause death and destruction in Europe, but is not capable of defeating NATO in a major confrontation.

“Using nuclear weapons at anytime is a lose lose proposition. The only real chance of survival is to not escalate with the use of nuclear weapons, even if the other side starts first.” Gustin Johnson stated.

There is not really such a thing as a “tactical nuclear weapon”. This refers to is a low yield (smaller) weapon.

There is no scenario in which nuclear weapons can be used against another nuclear power without a near certain escalation to a full nuclear exchange.

Even though I said “near certain”, you should read that as certain nuclear annihilation. Johnson continued.
