Today’s hosts Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon couldn’t help but laugh at the title of Prince Harry’s upcoming memoir, Spare, on Friday.
The book’s title refers to “the heir and the substitute,” a phrase often used to describe royal siblings. In the past, Harry was sometimes referred to as “Spare”, while his older brother, William, Prince of Wales, was considered “Heir”.
The description is rarely used these days after Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stepped down as “frontline” royals and moved to California in 2020.
While interviewing the Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers about Harry’s memoir, Stefanovic paused for a moment before saying the name of the book.
He started laughing and couldn’t even finish his sentence as Langdon said dryly, “Russell Myers is over all the important details. I think the title says it all.”
Myers agreed that the book’s title boded ill for the royal family, adding, “A couple of people have told me [he] should have called it ‘Despair’ to be honest.
“Prince Harry will be dropping bomb after bomb and I’m sure you can hear the screams coming from the palaces tonight.
“It’s not that title [pulling] Any punches, right? It’s a term that refers to ‘the heir and the surrogate’, something Harry has said he doesn’t particularly like.’
Myers suggested that the book will send “shockwaves” around the world upon its release early next year, prompting Stefanovic to dryly say, “Oh, great.”
