We can never be sure of the part of U.K Russia would nuke first, it is most likely Faslane near Glasgow as it is one of the biggest Nuclear Bomb/Submarine bases in the whole of the UK in attempt to have the damage and fallout within the UK.
The UK is a target rich environment. During the Cold War it was the most densly targeted country on Earth by the Soviets. And likely still is by the Russians.
During the Square Leg civil defence exercise in 1980, 131 UK targets were planned, with a total of 205Mt. Immediate deaths were predicted at 29 million. From a population at that time of 55 million.
Planners conceded this was likely an underestimate and the UK could expect up 1000Mt to be used against it. After the fall of the Soviet Union, released military documents showed they were not far off the mark in their planning.
In 2022 much is made of the Russian Federation “only” having around 1650 warheads ready to use (of a 6500 stockpile) and that this would drastically reduce how many could be used against Britain.
However, as second largest NATO power, with its own nuclear arsenal, the UK is still a priority target for Russian nuclear war planners. It is anyone’s guess how many sites are still targeted for nuclear strikes. But it will definitely be dozens.
Even a “limited” strike in the densly populated UK would leave several million dead in the first exchange.
Below is a map of those places hit in ‘Square Leg’.
