Christopher Robert Evans born June 13, 1981, is an American actor
who began his career with roles in television series, such as in Opposite Sex in 2000.
Following appearances in several teen films including 2001’s Not Another Teen Movie, he
gained attention for his portrayal of Marvel Comics character Human Torch in 2005’s Fantastic Four, and
its sequel Fantastic Four:
Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Evans made further
appearances in film adaptations of comic books and graphic novels: TMNT (2007), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010),
and Snowpiercer (2013).
If he did, it was mild. He shows almost no
signs of steady use in his physique. He doesn’t look significantly different
between his role as Johnny Storm and Steve Rogers.
Some claim he gained 20 pounds of muscle for
the role, which Chris has laughingly denied, saying: “Yeah, Skinny Steve was
CGI. That wasn’t me.”
We can easily see that the claim of twenty
pounds of muscle is laughable.
I’d be amazed if he were 10 pounds heavier. I’m guessing maybe five.
Regardless, the “transformation” from 2005 to 2011 is minimal and easily
achieved with diet and workout. It wouldn’t even need to be severe workouts,
honestly.
But work out he did. Chris has stated in
interviews that he worked out like a fiend for a pose off before the iconic
transformation scene.
His words: “I did work to that shot where he
comes out of the machine to make him look a tiny bit bigger and leaner than he
is in the rest of the movie.” However, “but, ultimately, it is about
performance rather than just looking good. He has to be able to sprint, throw a
shield, jump over a wall. The aesthetics are almost like a byproduct of being
an athlete.”
And from other roles he’s done (Losers and Puncture), we can see he tends to keep
in decent shape.
So… no, I don’t
think it’s steroids. I think it’s decent genes and living healthy, which
according to Evans is his lifestyle, then getting lean and ripped with a day or
two of diet and exercise before filming the scene that calls for it.
